Safety Info

 

Rain or shine. but not unsafe!

The paddle will take place rain or shine, so please come prepared for those conditions.

However, if the river is deemed unsafe for paddling due to a heavy or prolonged rainfall, the 8k white water event may be cancelled. If the event is cancelled, it will not be rescheduled.

The flat water routes and events at the Mississauga Canoe Club will happen rain or shine!

Important Safety Info

  1. Safety crews will be stationed at various points along the route and watercraft will be checked for safety prior to launching.
  2. At least one paddler in the boat must be experienced. Helmets are not required but are recommended.
  3. If you are approaching another boat and need to pass, please let the other paddlers know you are coming and pass only on straight, calm stretches of the river.
  4. If the day is sunny, please bring sunscreen, a sun hat and a sweater or jacket. If it rains, please wear warm clothes and a waterproof jacket, pants, hat, boots and gloves. Be sure to bring a set of dry clothes, sealed in plastic and secured in your canoe. You will appreciate this if you tip!
  5. We recommend that you bring some snacks and drinks for your trip.
  6. PRIOR to launching, a waiver and a registration form must be completed by each person in the canoe on the day of the event.
  7. Rubber dinghies and rafts are not suitable for the 8km white water route and will not be permitted to launch. The only permitted watercraft for the 8km white water route is canoes and kayaks.
  8. As outlined by Transport Canada , the following safety equipment must be on board:
    • one Canadian-approved personal flotation device or lifejacket of appropriate size for each person
    • one buoyant heaving line of not less than 15 metres in length
    • at least one paddle
    • one bailer
    • a sound-signaling device, such as a whistle
