September 14, 2016 – The Belfountain Salamander Festival is celebrating its 20th year on Saturday, September 24, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in partnership with Credit Valley Conservation (CVC), the Belfountain Community Organization and community partners.  The festival features an artisans’ market, live music and live animals with Creature Quest.

“For the past 20 years, this festival has been entertaining and educating the community,” said Shawn Verge, Operations Manager, south zone at CVC. “It’s a great opportunity for family time, while supporting the local community and enjoying the fall season at the park.”

The festival takes its name from the Jefferson salamander, a native amphibian in Ontario.  It is found primarily in the Niagara Escarpment, which runs through Belfountain. The Jefferson salamander is a protected species under the Ontario Endangered Species Act. It was listed as an endangered species in 2011. Each year visitors to the Belfountain Salamander Festival have an opportunity to learn about CVC’s efforts to protect green space and native species, such as the Jefferson salamander.

Activities take place in the Village of Belfountain and Belfountain Conservation Area.  Activities include:

The Village of Belfountain

  • Artisans market
  • Silent auction
  • Live entertainment, including Kewl Fusion, Melyssa Kerr and Angelina Vaccaro from the Toronto Police Pipe Band
  • Delicious local food featuring the Belfountain Inn’s squash soup

Belfountain Conservation Area

  • Live salamanders
  • Kids Eco Zone Activity Centre
  • Free yoga sessions
  • Real river critters and live animals with Creature Quest from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Admission to the festival is free. Limited parking is available for this event. Please consider carpooling.
