How Does Stormwater Runoff from Your Property Affect
Lake Ontario and Your Drinking Water?

There are things that you can do around your property to help ensure that only clean water is entering the storm drainage system! Applying the principles of "Pollution Prevention" can help to ensure that you are in compliance with the storm sewer bylaw, protecting your local environmental health and protecting your drinking water supplies.

Pollution Prevention Survey Results

In 2009, Credit Valley Conservation (CVC) and the City of Mississauga conducted a survey of local businesses to gauge their knowledge of pollution prevention and other environmental issues.

We were surprised by what we learned:

  • Only 33% of the people surveyed knew that their drinking water came from Lake Ontario.
  • Only 38% knew ways that their business could help protect Lake Ontario, their source for drinking water.
  • Only 30% knew that runoff from their property (rainwater, melting snow) flows directly into local creeks and then Lake Ontario with out being treated or filtered.

Source water is untreated water from streams, lakes, or underground aquifers that is used to supply public drinking water systems and private wells.  Source water protection is about protecting both the amount and quality of these water sources, now and into the future.  Source water comes from one of two sources: surface water or groundwater.
