Flood Warning & Forecasting

Flood Warning & Forecasting

CVC uses real-time stream flow, water level and precipitation information to determine potential flood conditions and to issue warnings for the Credit River Watershed.

CVC uses an easy to identify colour-coded warning system. When flooding is possible or about to occur, CVC also issues flood messages to municipal flood coordinators, emergency services and the media based on the following criteria. Please note that even during normal flow conditions, the risk to personal safety associated with flowing water still exists.

Gauging Colours Table

NORMAL generally indicates low flow to base flow conditions. It should be noted that during Normal flow conditions, the inherent risk to personal safety associated with flowing water still exists.

WATER SAFETY STATEMENT High flows, unsafe banks, melting ice or other factors that could be dangerous for recreational users such as anglers, canoeists, hikers, children, pets, etc. Flooding is not expected.

FLOOD OUTLOOK STATEMENT Early notice of the potential for flooding based on weather forecasts calling for heavy rain, snow melt, high wind or other conditions that could lead to high runoff, cause ice jams, lakeshore flooding or erosion.

FLOOD WATCH Flooding is possible in specific watercourses or municipalities. Municipalities, emergency services and individual landowners in flood-prone areas should prepare.
