Blue Skies, Green Fields, Fresh Air, Clean Water.

There is something special about living in the countryside. It’s a lifestyle with advantages, but it also comes with hard work. Septic systems, wells, wildlife, forests, streams and ponds are not the domain of the average city dweller. Living close to the land means knowing and caring for the land.

Credit Valley Conservation’s Caring for the Credit Landowner Stewardship Program can help you get to know your property better and provides tips, tools and resources for land and water management.

Caring for Your Land & Water Workshops

Entry into our Landowner Stewardship Program typically starts by attending the Caring for Your Land & Water workshop.  At this workshop, landowners receive aerial photos and maps showing the important natural areas and features on their property.  Landowners are introduced to the issues facing the Credit River Watershed and learn how their land connects to the larger issues and solutions.  All workshop participants receive a copy of Your Guide to Caring for the Credit and detailed instruction on how to use the guide to develop a land management Action Plan specific to their needs.  Experts are on hand to provide advice and recommendations.  The workshops are also a great opportunity to meet with neighbours that are dealing with similar issues and to exchange information and experiences.

Caring for Your Land and Water workshops are happening throughout the year.  Visit our calendar of events to sign up for an upcoming workshop.

Better yet, get your neighbourhood started on Caring for the Credit…Co-host your own Caring for Your Land and Water workshop with CVC!  Do you have friends and neighbours that have questions about the safety of their well, caring for their trees or learning about the wildlife on their property? Invite them over and CVC will provide:

  • Local natural areas information including property aerial photos and maps
  • Free copies of the Caring for the Credit Guide.
  • Environmentally friendly giveaways
  • Refreshments

To book your own Caring for Your Land and Water workshop contact our CVC Stewardship Coordinators. Please note availability is limited and a minimum number of participants are required.

Your Guide to Caring for the Credit

Your Guide to Caring for the Credit is a specially designed manual developed for the rural landowner.  The guide can help you inventory the natural features on your property, assess your management practices and create an action plan to address any issues that you identify.

The guide itself consists of a series of worksheets that cover all aspects of managing a rural property from septic systems to forest management, energy conservation and construction activities. Worksheets are broken down into individual topics so you can easily identify which actions are of highest priority. Every worksheet has its own comprehensive resource list to ensure you have the information you need to make decisions and take action.

Your Guide to Caring for the Credit is available through participation at any of our Discover Your Land & Water workshops.

Property Site Visits

Caring for Your Land & Water workshop participants are eligible to sign-up for a site visit with one of our Stewardship Coordinators.  This provides an opportunity for landowners to meet one-on-one with CVC’s experts to discuss areas of interest or concern on their property.  Landowners are encouraged to complete their Action Plan prior to the site visit in order that our Stewardship Coordinators can arrange for the appropriate technical staff to attend the site visit.

Specialized Workshops

These advanced workshops are designed for landowners who have completed their Action Plan and have particular areas of interest that require expert advice.  Workshop topics such as woodlot management, caring for your pond, managing invasive species, and septic system management are covered.  Visit our calendar of events to sign up for an upcoming workshop.

Recognizing Your Contribution to Conservation

Landowner who take on-the-ground action by completing a stewardship project such as a tree planting, invasive species removal or wetland habitat improvement receive a free Caring for the Credit laneway sign that recognizes your contribution to protecting the health of the Credit River watershed.

Our Stewardship Coordinators are always available to discuss your land management and property stewardship goals.  Feel free to get in touch.  We’d love to hear from you!
