Managing Invasive Species
Invasive species are most often non-native plants or animals that out-compete native species. They lack natural predators, grow aggressively, reproduce rapidly, and are difficult to eradicate. They are moved widely by humans, wildlife, wind and water.
A predominance of invasive species in our natural areas often results in decreased biodiversity. They can also introduce disease because they are not adapted to local conditions. It is important to avoid planting invasive plants on your property, and eradicate the invasive species already exist in your area.
The presence of invasive plants can reduce food and shelter for wildlife dependent on native plants and disrupt the natural ecosystem. Landowners should check regularly to ensure that invasive plants have not established themselves on their property.
