Managing Your Forest
In Ontario, forest management practices are “governed by an array of guides that outline silvicultural practices and methods to conserve biodiversity and enhance or protect wildlife habitat, aesthetics, watersheds and other values.” Informed management decisions, such as promoting the establishment of native trees and plants; careful removal of non native species; creating wildlife corridors, and providing protective cover for wildlife, will enhance the ecological health of your woodlot by creating important sources of food for habitat and wildlife.
Landowners considering harvesting, logging or active forest management in their woodlot should contact a Registered Professional Forester(RFP) for advice. Registered Professional Foresters have the diverse knowledge and experience to advise you on the technical, ecological and financial aspects of managing woodlands. Almost all municipal tree cutting bylaws in Ontario will require a RPF to signoff on your harvest plan.
