Bank Erosion
Erosion is the natural process of the wearing away of the earth’s surface by water, wind or glacial action. Streams and rivers migrate and meander naturally, water levels rise and fall, and banks and shorelines shift with erosion. This dynamic process is sometimes accelerated by activities or processes such as flooding, increased lake levels associated with land use, land drainage, human activities (e.g., lawn mowing), and/or climate change.
Shorelines can be protected by maintaining or planting native trees, shrubs and other plants which help stabilize soil. The roots of live plants knit soil particles together and can provide the same protection to river and stream banks as tons of rock. CVC has tree planting programs that can help you protect the shorelines on your property.
Erosion is always a concern as it impacts water quality, vegetation, wildlife habitat, and eventually entire ecosystems.
