Habitat Restoration
Rural landowners play an important role in steam, wetland and pond habitat restoration. These habitats, both terrestrial and aquatic, provide fish and wildlife with necessary food and shelter, and help to preserve water quality. Habitat restoration projects include:
- providing logs, brush and rocks for cover;
- enhancing existing habitat by planting native trees, shrubs and bushes along shorelines to promote shading and maintain water temperature and bank stability;
- maintaining vegetated buffers to prevent nutrients and sediments from getting into the water;
- and, creating structures, such as nesting boxes to attract birds and bats.
Before undertaking any habitat restoration projects, landowners should first speak with a CVC stewardship coordinator.
