Barnyard Runoff Control and Manure Storage

Manure is rich in nutrients and bacteria which has the potential to impair water quality if not managed appropriately. There are three phases to proper manure management: collection, storage and disposal. Construction of concrete barnyard facilitates the collection process, reducing the amount of nutrient and bacteria lost to surface and ground waters. Manure stored in a concrete, roofed manure storage also prevents loss of nutrients and bacteria. Manure is a valuable soil amendment. Manure spread on farm fields should be performed in accordance with a nutrient management plan. Application rates, timing and setback distances to sensitive features such as streams or wells should be followed.
