Erosion Control Structures
Farm fields on rolling topography that have poor draining soils may experience gully erosion during times of heavy rainfall or snow melt. Top soil that is lost from the field this year, translates into lost yields in subsequent years. To prevent gully erosion in farm fields, erosion control structures such as berms or grassed waterways can be constructed. These structures protect soil by reducing the erosive force of flowing water. Specific site conditions must be taken into account when designing erosion control structures to ensure their effectiveness.
